In presenting the Statistician of the Year award for 2000 to Don Ambrose, the ACS President, Eric Midwinter, spoke briefly on Mr Ambrose’s contribution to cricket history and statistics. He said that, despite an engagingly unassuming demeanour, Mr Ambrose had made a reputable name for himself as a collector, researcher and librarian, especially associated with Lancashire cricket. He had built up a formidable database on Lancashire cricket at all levels and had assisted the ACS in the compilation of their Statistical Survey series. One aspect of Mr Ambrose’s research which was exceedingly useful to many cricket historians was his knowledge of professionals engaged with Lancashire league clubs. He was always keen to provide other members with data, should they require it. The Award was thoroughly deserved.
Mr Ambrose thanked the members for the honour they had bestowed upon him.
